Have you ever prepared yourself for a test and felt completely confident before taking the test, only to experience the inability to recall the information to properly respond?

Test anxiety can manifest in many ways. Becoming unfocused, experiencing racing thoughts, mental blocks, brain fog and the extreme of even having physical symptoms.

Test anxiety is a type of performance anxiety wherein there is a pressure to pass to achieve positive results, there is a time frame in which to pass, and even an advancement in employment. Perhaps even judgment from the peers in your office as well as family and friends.

Also, many times when taking tests in a situation where there are other people in the room, who are also taking tests, one can sense the fear and anxiety from them. It is very important to be aware of this and stay centered and focused on yourself and the task at hand.

You may begin experiencing a block and the fear sets in which can cause your breathing to become shallow. When taking shallow breaths, you are not receiving the proper oxygen to get to the brain. Thus, with less oxygen your mind is not as focused and can go blank.

Even before taking the actual test, it is important for you to check in with your breathing. Are you taking shallow, half breaths into your chest or are you taking those life enhancing breaths all the way into your stomach? These deep breaths oxygenate the blood and allows you to relax and focus.

You may also enjoy doing some yoga and also some QiGong. Both of these activities assist in helping people with breathing, feeling more focused and relaxed, as well as feeling more balanced. In addition, QiGong, assists in getting more in touch with your energy and when it feels stuck or blocked, you can learn how to move it so you are in the flow of energy and not feeling blocked.

By practicing visualization skills for successfully preparing, studying and taking the examination, you place yourself in the situation ahead of time to allow you to be more focused and relaxed during the actual test. Also, during your visualization, if any negative thoughts, feelings and emotions come up that are stored in your unconscious mind, can be addressed so they do not surface during the actual test taking time.

The following is a list of  “ARE-NCARB EXAM – AUDIO VISUALIZATIONS”,  “CSE –  EXAM – AUDIO VISUALIZATIONS”,    “PROFESSIONAL – AUDIO VISUALIZATIONS”,  offered by MBA Educational Horizons for the ARE/NCARB Examination as well the California Supplemental Examinations (CSE) that will assist you in managing any anxiety that you may have about your test taking abilities so you will perform with a clear, focused and confident mind.

MBA has recently added –  “AUDIO VISUALIZATIONS”,   to help the ARE(NCARB) Exam Candidates as well as the California Supplemental Exam (CSE) Candidates and also the ones Practicing Architecture. These 20 to 30 min. audios can be played over and over again on any recording device. THE IMPORTANCE OF – “MOMENTUM in TAKING EXAMS”

In the over 27 years my company, MBA, has been offering ARE & CSE Exam and Professional Seminars, Workshops, Tutoring, Coaching, Materials, … we have always found that when the candidate and/or Professional follow through in taking their exams or researching in their daily practice, they have a higher possibility of success.

When the ball is dropped in following through, for example,  taking the ARE-NCARB or CSE Exam Sections, we have found that it becomes much more difficult to pick the ball back up and continue on.  It is almost like continuing on with College or the University right after High School.  For those that say I am going to take a couple of years off,  have about an 80% chance of not going on to further studies.

A Candidate might take one or two sections and then stop because they get busy, or just put it back on the shelf for a while,  drop the ball as they say.  Candidates tell me that they dropped the ball so long ago they do not even know where the ball is. However, what they do not realize is that it becomes much more difficult  in continuing on with the other sections at a later date. Getting back into the study mode, etc… .  I also know that things happen in life where it is absolutely necessary to take time from your studies and the exam process such as health issues, family emergencies and these types of situations.  I am definitely not addressing these events and in some situations it is mandatory for us to take time for ourselves and our families.  However, I am speaking of those times when one can get “off track” and just simply  decide not to put effort toward the exams for a while. There sometimes seems that there is always an excuse even if there are no obstacles in the way. How dedicated is the candidate or individual?

My office began hearing from people, who because they had become too busy, got off track from their studies and exam schedule and some never had a schedule at all,  and unfortunately, are under the 5 year clock with NCARB. Consequently,   will be or are losing the exams they had previously passed because so much time has passed, and now they have additional stress in taking the exams.

MBA is having great success (85% to 95%), with a new service called the “Procrastinator Special” which creates Exam Momentum for the candidate. This service is designed to help pick the candidate up who has dropped the ball, so to speak, and continue on and finish the sections to keep them on track and focused and to keep that “Exam Momentum” continuing.  We are finding our Procrastinator Special very effective for those candidates who are just beginning, since now they have the focus and energy to move forward with great confidence. If you wish to double your efforts then we call that special “The Exam Buster”. If you have a problem in following through on a specific schedule with us then you can do this Program on your schedule and we can that special “The Classroom Special”, like going to class and doing homework assignments and taking exams, etc… .

These programs include laying out a realistic schedule and submitting through e-mails, weekly curriculums, along with 30 minute coach call at the beginning and end of the week for three weeks or 6 calls (3 hrs.),  – for the ARE-NCARB Exam Candidate,  and six weeks or 12 calls (6 hrs.),  – for the CSE candidate.   Additionally, included is a 2 hour skype/facetime/phone Tutor per ARE Exam Subject (4 hrs for Structural Systems), and 2 hr/ea for the 3 sections of the CSE Exam (6 hrs total), and a  2 hour/subject recording for the ARE (12 – 14 hrs), and 2hrs/section for the 3 sections of the CSE (2hrs per section = 6hrs total).  The week after the last coach call, the candidate takes the exam and then if it is NCARB Exam, we continue on with the next subject and so forth until we have successfully passed all of the sections. The seventh week the CSE candidate takes the exam.

It is important to continue on with this momentum or maintain the momentum to finish the exam.  The new  5.0 NCARB Exam will be offered in 2016, the above policy applies.  CSE might be in the process of changing as well.
